Ceto Surf is an online surfing movement of girls connecting through their love of the ocean, waves and sun. Developed and founded by Courtney Hayes, the project hopes to create a meme that will inspire more girls to join the sport, connect with like-minded girls, and band together to help conserve the ocean.
As the mirror.me girl and a fellow surfer, I connected with Courtney to find out more about Ceto Surf to give you a back ground of her mirror cloud.
Jenna@mirror.me: Who are you? What do you do?
Courtney: I’m a documentary and commercial film producer from the fishing port of Gloucester, Massachusetts. I grew up tuna fishing with my dad and have always loved the ocean. I didn’t start surfing until my thirties but was soon hooked. In 2009, I attended the Harvard Kennedy School of Government to pursue a new career in oceans policy and began developing an online community for women surfers called CetoSurf.com.
Jenna@mirror.me: As a social graph, our job is to connect people by their interests. As an all-female surf community, tell us about your job to connected women through surfing?
Courtney: CetoSurf.com welcomes women of all ages and surfing abilities who share a passion for the ocean, fun and friendship. As founder and Jefe, my job is to create opportunities for women to connect and inspire each other, online and off. We’re only three months old but already have members across the US, Europe, South America and the Pacific. So far, we’ve surfed and SUPed together, cleaned beaches and harbors, helped autistic kids learn to surf, and enjoyed over a thousand oysters and countless cocktails. Future plans include surf trips with a community service component and partnerships with like-minded surf industry folks. Ceto thinks great things can happen while you’re having fun!
Jenna@mirror.me: What are the goals of CetoSurf? Why did you decide to start this movement?
Courtney: The idea for Ceto grew out of my love of the ocean and a desire to connect with other women surfers. I felt alienated by the male-dominated mainstream surf culture and wanted to build a global community of women surfers. I saw all these amazing women surfers out there leading local conservation efforts and promoting women’s health awareness, and was inspired by their collective potential to affect change. But there wasn’t one place where women surfers could come together and inspire each other to do great things. Ceto fills that void by offering women surfers everywhere a fun, non-competitive place to connect. By connecting and empowering women surfers, Ceto seeks to foster greater access to the joy of waves, promote a healthy ocean environment and a more sustainable surf industry.
Jenna@mirror.me: Paint a picture of the exact moment you knew surfing had changed your way of life?
Courtney: My first proper ride did me in. Summer swell in New England is usually small but, on this day, chest high sets were rolling in. I saw this beauty coming and found myself gliding across a glassy face of emerald water that extended above my head. It wasn’t so much the size of the wave but the experience of being in sync with something so powerful and beautiful. After that, I knew surfing would always be in my life.
